While there are many similarities between online poker play and live play, there are some significant differences as well. If you're an online player who would like to play Texas Holdem tournaments or cash games in a live card room, here is a list of dos and don'ts to follow.
Do
Relax
Poker is poker and in the end, that's what everyone is there to do. If you're playing for low stakes, or sometimes even for high stakes, other players will probably be happy to help you get into the swing of things. If you have any questions, you can always ask a floorman for assistance.
Tip
When you play at home online, you don't have to tip anyone. In a live casino, it is expected.
If you order drinks or food or have someone park your car, it's customary to give a few dollars. When you win a pot, it's standard practice to toss the dealer a dollar or two out of your winnings. As you watch, you will notice that almost every player does this.
Watch
When you play online, there's not too much to observe, but the same is not true of a live game. All of your opponents are exhibiting behaviors at all times, and you never know when you may spot something that can be useful to you in a game situation.
Don't
Cheat
Any dishonest play will probably be caught, as cameras are everywhere in a live casino. You will be at best banned from casino and at worst face criminal charges. There is also behavior that is less than ethical, such as pretending to bet without chips in your hand or releasing a big stack as a bet, and then quickly grabbing half of it back when called, which you may get away with, but should not be attempted.
Be Abusive
Throwing cards or chips or berating the dealer or other players is not acceptable. It isn't the dealer's fault that you took a bad beat.
Players travel to a casino to have a good time. Don't ruin it for them. If you can't be around other people, stick to online play.
Take Chips off the Table
You must keep all your chips in play at all times until you are ready to quit the game. If you take your chips off the table, your seat will be given to another player. An exception is that it is okay to give a server a few dollars to pay for a drink/meal and tip.
